Dark allegory describes the narrator's journey up the Congo River and his meeting with, and fascination by, Mr。 Kurtz, a mysterious personage who dominates the unruly inhabitants of the region。 Masterly blend of adventure, character development, psychological penetration。 Considered by many Conrad's finest, most enigmatic story。

For the length of this book, it took me an embarrassingly long time to read but that’s just because it was so full of metaphors that the narrative just got completely lost and I had to spend ages sitting and eventually googling what had just happened。 The only thing that was made easy to understand was that the book is one big metaphor for darkness, with Conrad comparing deep Africa to a heart of darkness。 When this is the only thing made possible to easily understand it brings a whole host of p For the length of this book, it took me an embarrassingly long time to read but that’s just because it was so full of metaphors that the narrative just got completely lost and I had to spend ages sitting and eventually googling what had just happened。 The only thing that was made easy to understand was that the book is one big metaphor for darkness, with Conrad comparing deep Africa to a heart of darkness。 When this is the only thing made possible to easily understand it brings a whole host of problems regarding colonial literature。 I know that it’s a book of its time but there is a problem when the only easily grasped part are the descriptions of the ‘savages’ - are we supposed to feel sorry for Marlon when he is ambushed by them? I for one definitely do not and just feel bad that the British invaded their countries in the first place。 。。。more

The only book I actually read in AP English Literature class lol。 I read it (on my own volition) because I liked the content; and it was shorter。 It was still pretty complex, though。 It's a very controversial book nowadays, but it was alright。 The only book I actually read in AP English Literature class lol。 I read it (on my own volition) because I liked the content; and it was shorter。 It was still pretty complex, though。 It's a very controversial book nowadays, but it was alright。 。。。more

A nice book! It highlighted the wrong doings and corruption of government of the time。 However, the language used in it is a bit difficult 。

It was odd seeing virtually everyone lionizing and glorifying Kurtz as some kind of remarkable, amazing, good and pure creature, who operated outside the boundaries of mere morality (as if that was desirable。。。) Kurtz was little more than a pathetic murdering thief, an evil little man causing death and destruction and mayhem to all those around him。Perhaps the whole point of the novel was specifically to make you scratch your head and wonder why everyone is quite SO impressed by the evil bastard It was odd seeing virtually everyone lionizing and glorifying Kurtz as some kind of remarkable, amazing, good and pure creature, who operated outside the boundaries of mere morality (as if that was desirable。。。) Kurtz was little more than a pathetic murdering thief, an evil little man causing death and destruction and mayhem to all those around him。Perhaps the whole point of the novel was specifically to make you scratch your head and wonder why everyone is quite SO impressed by the evil bastard, thinking he’s some great and good genius。。。 to make us question why we elevate and venerate evil people in general。 I dunno。 My initial assumption after reading the quote about how Kurtz could have led an “extreme political party” made me think perhaps it was an allegory about someone like Hitler, who was an evil monster, but his supporters thought he was a genius above the “laws” of morality (like a Kurtz), until I checked the publication date and realized it couldn’t have been。 。。。more

Worth reading as long as you're doing so with a critical lens。 Riddled with racism and xenophobia。 I can understand why this book has literary significance, but the xenophobia combined with the density of the text makes this book pretty difficult to get through, much less enjoy。 Worth reading as long as you're doing so with a critical lens。 Riddled with racism and xenophobia。 I can understand why this book has literary significance, but the xenophobia combined with the density of the text makes this book pretty difficult to get through, much less enjoy。 。。。more

This was a hard book to get through。 It lays bare the atrocities of colonialism along the Congo river and contains many cringe-inducing racist remarks。 It is hard to tell how much of this is intentional built in to shed light on these horrors。 Perhaps it’s worth a read both for this perspective and for some other insights found in any well written novel。 Still, it didn’t fly as one of the greats to me。

I never heard of this book until my AP English teacher had us read it for class。 I wasn't thrilled to read it at first because I was so busy with other things like theater and graduation, but I'm glad that I was wrong。 I would call this book "72 pages of poetry!" quoted from Ashlie Thomas, my AP English teacher。 Even though the themes and topics were extremely heavy, I loved reading every page of it, which I made notes for each page for our class discussions。 But I had to look at the slides that I never heard of this book until my AP English teacher had us read it for class。 I wasn't thrilled to read it at first because I was so busy with other things like theater and graduation, but I'm glad that I was wrong。 I would call this book "72 pages of poetry!" quoted from Ashlie Thomas, my AP English teacher。 Even though the themes and topics were extremely heavy, I loved reading every page of it, which I made notes for each page for our class discussions。 But I had to look at the slides that Mrs。 Thomas made for us in order to understand what's really happening on each page (since their aren't any chapters) and I also love hearing my classmates interpretations about the book as well。 I know that I'll miss that class, but I'm grateful that my teacher let me mark and keep the copy that I was borrowing from the school! 。。。more

Reread, last time about 40 years ago。 Hard to get Apocalypse Now out of my head as I read。 That isn't one of my favorite movies, but it has stuck with me。 Conrad's tale provides plenty of fodder for all political stripes。 Often it seems anti-colonial, often racist, often sexist, often worshipful of the great white man (Kurtz), often contemptuous of capitalism and all its tentacles, economic & military。 Writing is overwrought, feverish, which is why it is good that it is short。 Reread, last time about 40 years ago。 Hard to get Apocalypse Now out of my head as I read。 That isn't one of my favorite movies, but it has stuck with me。 Conrad's tale provides plenty of fodder for all political stripes。 Often it seems anti-colonial, often racist, often sexist, often worshipful of the great white man (Kurtz), often contemptuous of capitalism and all its tentacles, economic & military。 Writing is overwrought, feverish, which is why it is good that it is short。 。。。more

A bit of a difficult read, not easy to follow the plot and the story, especially with Apocalypse Now in mind。。。 However the descriptions take you somewhere deep in Africa and the atmospheric tension is also well spread。。。

My review in one sentence: “????????!?!?????????” What is this book about? I JUST finished it and then I read the summary on Wikipedia because that is how perplexing this authors writing style is to my ears。 I can imagine my 10th grade classmates attempting to write essays out of this classic 😆 Now THAT would be an entertaining read!
